According to <i><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=VME9AQAAMAAJ&amp;dq=1916+poor+richards+dictionary+of+piladelphia&amp;source=gbs_navlinks_s\" target=\"_blank\">Poor Richard&#8217;s Dictionary of Philadelphia,<\/a> <\/i>nearly fifty<i> <\/i>of the city\u2019s public structures: hospitals, schools, institutes, hotels, sacred places, museums, theatres, opera houses, government buildings, clubs and railroad stations were sited along the 10-mile plus length of Broad Street. As discussed <a href=\"https:\/\/phillyhistory.wpengine.com\/index.php\/2015\/04\/broad-and-market-streets-the-intersection-of-past-and-present\/\" target=\"_blank\">last time<\/a>, this plan was long in the making. William Penn, who almost certainly found inspiration in the urban visions of Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio in giving Broad Street its plain, forthright name in the 1680s, intended <i>exactly<\/i> that. It took a while\u2014two centuries\u2014 to fully catch on, but in the fullness of time, Broad Street became Philadelphia\u2019s Public Avenue, the venue for civic life.<\/p>\n<p>But things change, and many of the buildings that once lined Broad Street are now gone. In this, the first of two posts dedicated to the expected 30,000 participants in the 2015 Broad Street Run, we link to what\u2019s lost on Broad, some of the buildings no longer seen along this 10-mile course.<\/p>\n<p>From Broad Street and Somerville Avenue, heading south:<\/p>\n<p>1.0 miles \u2013 Broad, just south of Blavis Street: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillyhistory.org\/photoarchive\/Detail.aspx?assetId=42011\" target=\"_blank\">Saint Luke\u2019s Hospital.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>1.2 miles \u2013 Broad and the Roosevelt Boulevard: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillyhistory.org\/photoarchive\/Detail.aspx?assetId=7225\" target=\"_blank\">The first of many gas stations.<\/a> This one designed for the Atlantic Refining Company.<\/p>\n<p>1.8 miles \u2013 Broad and Erie: The Greek Revival temple of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillyhistory.org\/photoarchive\/Detail.aspx?assetId=42047\" target=\"_blank\">North Central Trust Company<\/a>, on the southeast corner, directly across from the now-closed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillyhistory.org\/photoarchive\/Detail.aspx?assetId=118885\" target=\"_blank\">Bowlorama and its time-keeping billboard<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>2.1 miles \u2013 Broad and Ontario: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillyhistory.org\/photoarchive\/Detail.aspx?assetId=42013\" target=\"_blank\">Samaritan Hospital<\/a> and the recently demolished <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillyhistory.org\/photoarchive\/Detail.aspx?assetId=12065\" target=\"_blank\">Temple University Medical School<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>2.4 miles \u2013 Broad and Allegheny: Philadelphia original Convention Hall, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillyhistory.org\/photoarchive\/Detail.aspx?assetId=6775\" target=\"_blank\">inside<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillyhistory.org\/photoarchive\/Detail.aspx?assetId=7173\">out<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>3.4 miles \u2013 Broad and Susquehanna: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillyhistory.org\/photoarchive\/Detail.aspx?assetId=208\" target=\"_blank\">Our Lady of Mercy Roman Catholic Church<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>3.5 miles \u2013Broad, north of Diamond: The first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillyhistory.org\/photoarchive\/Detail.aspx?assetId=42024\" target=\"_blank\">Armory<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>3.8 miles \u2013Broad and Berks: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillyhistory.org\/photoarchive\/Detail.aspx?assetId=5740\" target=\"_blank\">Gatehouse of Monument Cemetery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>4 miles \u2013 Broad and Cecil B.
