Photo from PhillyHistory.org.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When poet Beth Feldman-Brandt wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philadelphiastories.org\/taking-down-south-street-bridge\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Taking Down the South Street Bridge<\/em><\/a> in 2009, she had no idea how powerfully her final line, \u201cWe are used to finding our way among ruins,\u201d resonates in PhillyHistory.<\/p>\n<p>The original South Street Bridge was supposed to be a marvel of Philadelphia\u2019s Iron Age. Giant iron <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillyhistory.org\/PhotoArchive\/Detail.aspx?assetId=4736\" target=\"_blank\">columns<\/a>,\u00a0versions of a design innovated by the <a href=\"http:\/\/explorepahistory.com\/hmarker.php?markerId=1-A-2BD\" target=\"_blank\">Phoenix Iron Company<\/a>\u00a0of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania,\u00a0supported sections spanning the Schuylkill River. The manufacturer had hoped for more of a splash in Philadelphia at the Centennial Exhibition in 1876. For the grounds of the first American world\u2019s fair, they proposed a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:The_Centennial_Tower_Philadelphia_1876.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\">1,000-foot observation tower<\/a>. If built, this would be about twice the height of City Hall, then under construction, and about as tall as the Eiffel Tower, started a decade later. Metaphorically, the Phoenix Tower would rise from the ashes of the bitter, bloody Civil War. Had the proposal been approved, the Phoenix Tower would literally have been cast from recycled government military canon. But it\u00a0wasn&#8217;t\u00a0approved. Instead, the biblical sentiment of beating swords into plowshares would play out at the South Street Bridge, which opened for traffic months before, and miles away, from the Centennial grounds.<\/p>\n<p>Just a few seasons later, the bridge&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillyhistory.org\/PhotoArchive\/Detail.aspx?assetId=6702\" target=\"_blank\">columns<\/a>\u00a0began to crack. Engineers diagnosed the cause as moisture in the rubble fill packed inside, expanding as it froze. They strapped on a series of iron belts that kept the cracks from spreading, but there\u00a0wasn&#8217;t\u00a0anything engineers could do to retrofit a design flaw at the bridge\u2019s western approach. Beneath the roadbed, brick arches resting on granite piers which, in turn, rose from hundreds of wooden piles driven into the muddy riverbed. Problem was, in critical places, the piles had been driven down through only fifteen feet of mud, as far as packed gravel.<\/p>\n<p>When the gravel shifted, piles slipped, piers tipped and arches cracked. Then, early one February Sunday morning in 1878, \u201cthe crippled arches gave way at the haunches and fell,\u201d as assistant project engineer David McNelly Stauffer later put it. Like dominoes, \u201carch after arch went down, and the bridge was not much more than a wreck.\u201d\u00a0 There had been no casualties, but the two-year-old South Street Bridge was now useless.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3262\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3262\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wagnerfreeinstitute.org\/index.shtml\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3262   \" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/phillyhistory.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/South-Street-Bridge-1877.jpg\" width=\"540\" height=\"434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.phillyhistory.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/South-Street-Bridge-1877.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blog.phillyhistory.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/South-Street-Bridge-1877-300x241.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3262\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">South Street Bridge, Looking West, 1877. Murphy\u00a0wasn&#8217;t\u00a0around to present his side of the story. Stauffer stepped in, <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=RtRMAAAAYAAJ&amp;lpg=PA41&amp;ots=9mcSG798oS&amp;dq=%22fall%20of%20the%20western%20arched%20approach%22&amp;pg=PA42#v=onepage&amp;q=%22fall%20of%20the%20western%20arched%20approach%22&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">blaming<\/a>\u00a0\u201cthe tremor produced in the piles by travel on the bridge\u201d allowing \u201cpercolation of water down their sides.\u201d Stauffer admitted \u201cthe ground underlying this approach is an alluvial deposit, treacherous and unstable in character\u201d but defended the project\u2019s construction. \u201cIt is a matter of record that the piles under pier No. 2 were from 28 to 30 feet long,\u201d he wrote. Possibly so, but that\u00a0wasn&#8217;t\u00a0enough to compensate for the fact that the piles under the pier that failed first were only half that length.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=GdYLAAAAYAAJ&amp;vq=stauffer&amp;dq=Plenum-pneumatic%20process%20in%20sinking%20the%20cast-iron%20columns%20stauffer&amp;pg=PA202#v=onepage&amp;q=david%20mcneely%20knox%20stauffer&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">Stauffer\u2019s reputation<\/a>\u00a0didn\u2019t seem to suffer much, if at all. Before and even after the collapse, he had capitalized on his bridge expertise. He had written of the innovative construction technique (the Plenum-pneumatic process in sinking the cast-iron columns) in the <em>Journal of the Franklin Institute<\/em>. After the collapse, in a markedly different tone, Stauffer promoted his services for City Council\u2019s investigations in order that \u201cthe public may be enabled to form a correct judgment as to the methods actually pursued by the builders.\u201d Later, he continued to boast about the bridge\u2019s successful arches at its eastern approach. Decades later, Stauffer was still in the business, having included tunnels in his repertoire. But he also pursued another passion, collecting historical prints and compiling a four-volume dictionary of their artists. Stauffer&#8217;s <em>American Engravers Upon Copper and Steel<\/em>, published in 1907, soon became a classic research tool.<\/p>\n<p>In all of the discussion of the new, <em>new,<\/em> South Street Bridge, the collapse of the first South Street Bridge in 1878 drifted from memory. Today, we find some comfort in the claim made of Street Department\u2019s chief engineer and surveyor, that here is \u201cthe largest and most complex project in the history of the Streets Department.\u201d It\u2019s bicycle-friendly, pedestrian-friendly and has a <a href=\"http:\/\/planphilly.com\/eyesonthestreet\/2012\/07\/11\/south-street-bridge-lighting-gone-wild\/\" target=\"_blank\">wild lighting scheme<\/a>.
